Asparagus with its tender buttery sweet flavour and subtle earthy notes makes a perfect accompaniment to serve with fish. British Asparagus is highly prized seasonal treat. The UK season runs for a short eight week period from 23rd April to 21st June, (St Georges Day to The Summer Solstice – longest day) so enjoy it while it is widely available in our shops. With recent winters having been so mild however, the season has sometimes arrived as early as February. About Asparagus
One of the true delicacies of the vegetable world this vegetable is very easy to prepare and cook. Asparagus is a great healthy choice for your diet with high levels of vitamins A and C, potassium, iron and calcium.
Cooking Asparagus
Early in the season will probably just need a wash under the tap and a trim on the bottom . Later on the spears tends to get woody at the base – not such good eating. For these larger specimens bend the lower part until it snaps and throw the woody end away. If the bottom section has a tough skin pare away with a peeler or trimming knife to expose the paler and more tender flesh.
