Plaice has a fine, moist texture, bright white colour and a subtle but distinctive sweet flavour. Plaice is one of the most popular flat fish in the UK and also around Europe. From above it has a distinctive brown skin with bright orange spots, the underside is white. On our counter you will see that we sell the white and dark plaice fillets separately. Alternatively you can by a whole fish and we can fillet it for you. There is quite a variety in size so you may find that one fillet is enough for two.

Preparation time for this recipe will be about 10-12 minutes allow a further 8 minutes for  cooking time. Quantities below are for two people. This recipe will also work well with other flatfish.

Ingredients For Plaice Recipe With Lemon And Tomato

2 Plaice fillets
2 medium sized plum tomatoes
1 tsp small capers, rinsed
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
salt and freshly ground black pepper
juice and zest of a lemon
25g butter
small handful fresh basil leaves

Cooking Method For Plaice Recipe With Lemon And Tomato

Cover the tomatoes in boiling water for one minute, then slip out of their skins. Quarter, discard the skins and chop the flesh

Combine the small tomato chunks in a bowl with the capers, extra virgin olive oil, black pepper and salt, half the lemon juice and the lemon zest

Next heat the butter in a frying pan. Fry the plaice for a couple of minutes on each side on a medium heat.
Squeeze over the remaining lemon juice and season. Remove from the heat.

Tear the basil and add to the tomatoes.

Serve the plaice right away with the cooking juices poured over the top, alongside the tomato mixture and some new potatoes.
