Create a vibrant Mexican-inspired dinner with this spicy plaice taco recipe. Tacos are a traditional Mexican dish consisting of a small hand-sized corn or wheat tortilla topped with a filling. The tortilla is then folded around the filling and eaten by hand. They can be made with a variety of fillings and our fish recipe below has a delicious chipotle hit.

Preparation time will be about 15 minutes with a further 15 minutes cooking time. Quantities below are for two people.

Ingredients For Mexican Plaice Tacos

2 x 140g skinless plaice fillets from Walter Purkis & Sons
2 tbsp chipotle paste
½ lime, juiced
1 ½ tbsp vegetable oil
4 small Mexican corn tortillas, soft
1 onion, halved and sliced ¼-inch thick
1 green pepper, sliced ¼-inch thick
Pinch of salt
1 small ripe avocado, sliced
Handful of coriander leaves, roughly chopped

Cooking Method For Plaice Tacos

Slice the plaice into 2cm chunks and toss with the chipotle paste, lime juice and ½ tsp vegetable oil. Leave to marinate for 10 minutes.

In the meantime, heat the rest of the oil in a heavy skillet pan over a medium heat. Add the onion, pepper and a pinch of salt, stirring to coat the vegetables in the oil. When the onions start to brown, after 5 minutes, turn down the heat, stirring occasionally.

Add the plaice, and cook for 7 minutes until the fish flakes apart, and the vegetables are tender but still have some crunch.

Heat a grill pan and warm the tortillas. Assemble the tacos with the vegetables, plaice and avocado slices. Top with coriander. Serve with all the trimmings such as fresh guacamole, sweet and spicy pineapple salsa, garlicky soured cream and a jalapeño-spiked cabbage slaw for an authentic Mexican treat.
