Appledore Turkeys are a family run business with a farming heritage dating back to 1940 when Grandfather Frank Wreathall first started rearing turkeys. Today Clive and Andrew Wreathall manage the farm on the Romney Marsh in Kent and are passionate about the food they produce.
Members of the Traditional Farm Fresh Turkey Association, which sets the standard for top quality in Christmas turkeys, the brothers oversee the extraordinary care and attention given to every bird on their farm. Using traditional animal husbandry, their aim is to give all the birds a stress free, wholesome and natural lifestyle.
Traditional animal husbandry and concern about welfare means that all the birds live a slow growing healthy life, enjoying natural diets and the freedom to roam grassy paddocks. This contributes to the Bronze Turkeys’ distinctive taste and texture – ideal for the festive season.
Extraordinary care and attention is given to every one of Appledore Farm’s turkeys. From the day they arrive they are fed on a simple diet of wheat and vegetable proteins – free of additives, drugs or growth promoters. The free range Bronze turkeys enjoy a long and active life and after roaming the grassy paddocks during the day they are bedded down overnight on the farm’s home-grown wheat straw. Their welfare is of paramount importance and independent inspection confirms this.
Award Winning Christmas Turkey
Appledore Turkeys first entered the Great Taste awards in 2013 and they have won awards every year since. In 2013 they gained an award for their Free Range Bronze Turkey, in 2014 an award for the Free Range Bronze Turkey Crown and in 2015 awards for both. In 2016 they won a 2 star award for the traditional Farm Fresh Free Range Bronze Turkey and a star for the Traditional Farm Fresh Free Range Turkey Bronze Crown. They have won further Great Taste Awards in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and again in 2021. This year has been no exception and they have won further great taste awards in 2022.
The Great Taste judges are looking for great texture appearance and quality of ingredients. Above all, they are looking for truly great taste. Widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers, Great Taste awards are a signpost to a wonderful tasting product.
